    Christmas pinata stars recipe

     Ingredients 
     1 cup (150g) plain flour
     1 cup (150g) self-raising flour
     Bought royal icing, to decorate
     1/4 cup M&M’s Minis
     120g butter, softened
     1/2 cup (90g) pure icing sugar
     1 tsp vanilla bean paste
     2 Coles Brand Australian free range egg yolks

    Method

    Step 1
    Preheat oven to 180C. Line 2 baking trays with baking paper.

    Step 2
    Use an electric mixer to beat the butter and icing sugar until pale and creamy. Add the vanilla and egg yolks and beat until just combined. Add the combined flours and help your tot stir with a wooden spoon until the mixture just comes together. Turn onto a lightly floured surface and let those little fingers knead until smooth.

    Step 3
    Roll the dough out on a lightly floured surface to a 3mm-thick disc. Help your child use a star-shaped Christmas biscuit cutter to cut stars from the disc. Place on the baking tray. Use a smaller star-shaped cutter to cut a small star from the centre of 1 larger star on the tray. Remove the small star, leaving a star outline on the tray. Repeat with one third of the stars, re-rolling the small stars to make more biscuits. You should end up with 28 full stars and 14 star outlines.

    Step 4
    Bake for 10 mins or until lightly golden. Set aside on trays to cool.

    Step 5
    Make the royal icing following the packet directions. Spoon icing into a sealable plastic bag and snip off a tiny corner. Guide your child in piping the icing around the edge of a full star. Top with a cut-out star. Fill with a teaspoon of M&M’s Minis. Pipe icing over the top of the cut-out star. Place another full star on top to enclose filling. Set aside to set. Repeat with the remaining biscuits and icing. Decorate the tops of the biscuits with dots of the icing.
